Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano rising from the Rift Valley

Region

Northern Circuit (Rift Valley)

Best For

Volcano trekking

Ol Doinyo Lengai — the “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language — is an active volcano rising dramatically from the Rift Valley floor near Lake Natron. It is the only volcano on earth currently erupting natrocarbonatite lava, and its steep-sided cone offers one of Tanzania’s most challenging and rewarding treks, usually climbed overnight to summit at dawn.

The summit crater is reached after a steep overnight ascent on loose ash and scree, rewarded by sunrise views across the Rift Valley floor and, on clear days, Ngorongoro and Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Best time to visit

June to October and January–February for the driest, safest trekking conditions. This is a strenuous climb requiring good fitness.

How to experience it with us

We arrange guided night ascents combined with Lake Natron’s flamingo colonies and waterfall hikes — a spectacular 2–3 day off-the-beaten-path adventure.
