Carved from the legendary Selous Game Reserve, Nyerere is one of Africa’s largest national parks — a vast wilderness of woodland, lakes and the mighty Rufiji River. It offers what the northern parks cannot: boat safaris among hippos and crocodiles, walking safaris, and sightings of the endangered African wild dog, all with very few other vehicles.
Boat safaris on the Rufiji reveal hippo pods and large crocodiles at close range, while the surrounding woodland holds some of Tanzania’s last viable populations of African wild dog.
Best time to visit
June to October, when wildlife gathers along the Rufiji and its lakes. Many camps close during the heaviest rains (April–May).
